During the 2011 excavations at El Piquete—a building that served as both a civilian and combat shelter during the Spanish Civil War and was consequently almost completely devastated—fifteen naturally mummified bodies were discovered. This led to the creation of the Quinto Mummy Museum, where this collection—unique in Spain—is now exhibited, thanks to the efforts of a team of historians, scientists, bioanthropologists, and archaeologists.
